October Meeting

Tis the season to be spooky!

Here’s what to look forward to at our next meeting on Wednesday the 10th of October at The Hive WI (I can’t wait to see all my ghoul-friends again)…

Main Activities:

We will be joined by Sensei Terry A. Lee, a Ju-Jitsu instructor from Warrior Martial Arts.

Ju-Jitsu emphaises strategy and technique rather than physical strength. This means that smaller and weaker practitioners have the potential to best larger and stronger opponents so long as they have good technique.

The talk and demonstration will last for around an hour and a quarter.

Hive members will learn about self-defence and how to legally defend ourselves (perhaps against vampires and things, seen as Halloween is coming up).

It it not compulsory to join in, but do wear comfy clothes and appropriate footwear if you think you’d like to have a go.

Be careful if you have a health condition and check with your doctor if you have any concerns.

Swap Shops:

Our “Hive Library” is open for business.

We are swapping items that would be at home in any modern library. This includes books, DVDs, audiobooks, CDs, and quality magazines.

This Month’s Top Tip:

Because Christmas is such a busy time, anyone who would like to come to our Christmas Supper Club needs to sign up and pay the deposit at the October meeting.

The meal is on the 5th of December at The Victoria in Beeston.

The deposit is £10.

The price for two courses is £18 and the cost for three courses is £24.

Several vegetarian options are available.

Other News:

Speaking of Christmas, on December 12th The Hive WI will be making a donation of gifts to Midlands Women’s Aid (MWA).

The MWA provides a safe refuge and support for women and their children who are escaping domestic violence.

If you would like to donate a gift and have already started your Christmas shopping, please keep them in mind.

Gifts will need to be unwrapped (although donations of wrapping paper is appreciated).

You can donate a gift for a woman or a child.

The children at MWA are between the ages of 0-18.

We will post more about this on our Facebook page over November.

For anyone taking part in making craft projects to sell to raise funds for the QMC neonatal unit, the date of the sale is the 16th of November.

It is an annual event for the hospital and we hope to take part next year, too.

You can bring your craft items to the November meeting or contact us to leave them at a drop off point if you can’t make it on the evening.

Members have also been knitting clothes for the unit’s premature babies. The QMC have provided patterns for knitters to use, which you can download from our Facebook page here.

Phew, we had a lot of news this month!

This Month’s Marvellous Volunteers:

Sandra C, Ann B, and Jane B are our star bakers this month.

Christina W and Jane C will be helping out in the kitchens.

We need one more volunteer for our kitchens. If you are up for helping out, please send us a message on Facebook.

Thank you to our October team!

If you are bringing a cake please arrive early so we can slice and serve it ready for 7.20. We want to pay you back for the cost of the cake (up to £2.50 per cake) so please remember to sign for your reimbursement by seeing a committee member in the kitchen, too.

Time and Location:

We will meet at 7.30pm to 9.30pm on the 10th of October in the church hall on Foster Avenue, Beeston (opposite the library).

Refreshments:

If you’d like refreshments before we start, please come for around 7.20pm.

We will break for refreshments again later in the evening (do bring change!).

Please do not bring a cake if you have not already signed up to do so.

Remember to bring your mugs! (Cups will be provided if you forget).

Members and Guests:

There is space for guests, but please reserve your place by emailing us before coming.

The price of entry for guests is £5 at the door.

Your visitor’s fee will be refunded if you sign up for membership that evening.

Membership Renewal for 2019:

Please be aware that if you want to join us again in 2019 you will need to rejoin the WI in January.

WI members across the country renew their memberships in January. This will also be the case for members of The Hive WI. To make it a smoother transition for Hivers, we will provide you will the relevant forms ahead of time in December.

As always, any issues, comments or questions please do get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to help where we can.

See you at the next meeting!
