As the first few yellow leaves flutter down from the trees, we at the Hive are feeling wistful and asking ourselves deep questions like, “What kind of cakes will be on offer next week?”
Here is what to look forward to at our next meeting on Wednesday the 12th of September at The Hive WI…
Hold onto your bonnets. We will be delving into Nottingham’s past with historian, archeologist, and all-round amateur time traveller Peter Hammond.
“We’ve all heard of Boots the Chemists. But what about some of Nottingham’s many other chemists that also flourished a hundred years ago? This talk focuses on a selection of some of them, and we ‘sample’ some of the amazing products that they sold.”
Mr. Hammond is a fun and engaging speaker. The time will fly by so fast that you will live through an entire century and still be home in time for tea (if you haven’t had it already, that is).
After skipping a month for our August Picnic, our swap shop is back!
As usual, we are swapping items that would be at home in any modern library. This includes books, DVDs, audiobooks, CDs, and quality magazines.
This Month’s Top Tip:
Last month we shared an article on our Facebook page about food banks in Nottingham and how they were struggling to stay open.
You responded and asked if The Hive WI could host a food donation for the food bank in Beeston.
The answer was absolutely, definitely, yes.
Please donate what you “can”: canned foods that you can store in a cupboard are ideal, as well as long-life fruit juices and milk that don’t require refrigeration before opening, or other essentials such as sanitary products, toothpaste, and soap.

This Month’s Marvellous Volunteers:
Rosie M, Sarah C, and Sue E are our star bakers this month.
Sue E and Rebecca M will be helping out in the kitchens.
We need one more volunteer for our kitchens. If you are up for helping out, please send us a message on Facebook.
Thank you to our September team!
If you are bringing a cake please arrive early so we can slice and serve it ready for 7.20. We want to pay you back for the cost of the cake so please remember to sign for your reimbursement by seeing a committee member in the kitchen, too.
Time and Location:
We will meet at 7.30 to 9.30 on the 12th of September at The Assumption Church, Foster Avenue, Beeston.
If you’d like refreshments before we start, please come for around 7.20pm.
We will be closing the kitchen this month at 7.30 in time for our speaker.
We will break for refreshments again later in the evening (do bring change!).
Please do not bring a cake if you have not already signed up to do so.
Remember to bring your mugs! (Cups will be provided if you forget).
Members and Guests:
There is space for guests, but please reserve your place by emailing us before coming.
The price of entry for guests is £5 at the door.
Your visitor’s fee will be refunded if you join that evening.
As always, any issues, comments or questions please do get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to help where we can.
